董橋在一篇七十年代倫敦記事散文中提到Susan Sontag當時的一本經典「On Photography--論攝影」，董文中還引了該書中節錄攝影大師Frederick Sommer的一句話：「Life itself is not the reality. We are the ones who put life into stones and pebbles --生存不是生活，在生活的空間裏擺進一點心思，甚致一些石頭一些沙礫，慢慢營造生趣，那才叫生活」。

很喜歡這句話，石頭和沙礫，不是造景添花，而是苦難磨練出人生的美麗。 上網查了一下，Sommer是廿世紀初出生的巴西裔攝影大師，在少年時代就以其繪書天份一鳴驚人，後來在美國大學念建築。其風格被稱是超寫實早在「後現代」一詞出現前，他便使用再創作的拼貼手法來拍攝「無可拍攝的物體」。 上面引用的那句話全文如下：「Reality is greater than our dreams yet it is within ourselves that we find the clues to reality. Clues are essences and keys are stronger than the doors they open. Life itself is not reality. We are the ones who put life into stones and pebbles. If we did not dream reality would collapse.」，不知該如何翻譯這段才是恰當。
